Pick of the Week
The Substance Film
The filmmaker's unflinching critique addresses the oppressive nature of women's appearance along with the dreaded aspects of growing older. Demi Moore presents a masterful acting turn playing Elisabeth, an aging actress demoted to hosting an aerobics show on the small screen. Edged out thanks to her unscrupulous employer Harvey, played by Dennis Quaid, she undergoes a mysterious and horrifying treatment known as the Substance. This creates a youthful duplicate portrayed by Margaret Qualley, leading to a steadily more toxic connection between them. This Friday, the streaming service Paramount+

This Supernatural Story
Steven Soderbergh pushes his film-making abilities through this clever ghostly tale shot entirely from the perspective of a ghost. As a family with Lucy Liu as Rebekah plus Callina Liang as Chloe settles into their recent residence, the filming device – representing the ghost – tracks their movements. The teen shows signs of aware of the supernatural presence, and it seems protective of her. However, the motive remains? The premise is enjoyable that avoids overstaying, including a revelation that may be unexpected. Saturday 11 October, afternoon and evening times, the Sky channel

This Creepy Thriller
Derrickson's contained scarefest holds up well despite the lack of a follow-up. Located in the late 70s in Denver, a series of kidnappings has rendered the local kids frightened. After Finney is kidnapped by the kidnapper and imprisoned in a cellar, he anticipates the worst. But the non-functional line mounted nearby continues to ring, with spooky callers offering help, as the intuitive nightmares of his sister Gwen might rescue him. A solid creepfest. This Saturday, 10.50pm, Film4
This Dramatic Portrait
In the conflict between spirituality and money, the winner is obvious for Mammon in Showalter's delightfully tacky film adaptation regarding the shamed TV preacher and her criminal husband. The actor plays the greedy Jim, who proclaims early on, claiming divine approval for wealth. The couple commence capitalizing on the nation's spiritual convictions. It's a riot of poor styling, excessive cosmetics and insincerity, however Chastain manages to depict Tammy Faye in a likable light. Tuesday 14 October, early morning, on Film4
Black Bag
This week's another release by the same director is a spy mystery as sharp as the polo necks worn by Michael Fassbender's intelligence officer. He receives a mission with uncovering a mole inside the organization from a group of five – among them is Kathryn, played by Cate Blanchett. Both actors are experts of calm composure, resulting in an engaging psychological game of fact versus fiction takes place. Additional actors take part the smart espionage amusement. This Friday, multiple time slots, the Sky channel
